Atlanta, Georgia — On June 2, at 10:30 a.m., an employee of Summit Medical Associates, an abortion facility in Atlanta, Georgia, called 911 to report that a 22-year-old female was suffering with an ectopic pregnancy expected to rupture.
After a few minutes of interaction between the caller and the 911 dispatcher, a second employee interjected and stated the woman was six weeks and four days pregnant with cardiac activity. She went on to explain that the young woman had blood in her pelvic cul-de-sac and was suffering with extreme lower abdominal pain.
The symptoms likely represented intra-abdominal hemorrhage – a type of internal bleeding in which blood accumulates in the space between the organs and the inner lining of the abdominal wall.
The young woman’s condition was serious and required emergency intervention.
Last year, Georgia enacted a heartbeat law titled “Living Infants Fairness and Equality (LIFE) Act.” The law requires that abortion facilities make ultrasound technology available and confirm that the in utero child’s heartbeat is not detectable before performing an abortion.
In this case, an ultrasound detected cardiac activity and an ectopic pregnancy, along with the surrounding circumstances that led the staff to believe a dangerous fallopian tube rupture was imminent. Click here to see computer-aided dispatch transcript.
According to Operation Rescue’s most recent annual report, a significant number of abortion clinics do not perform an ultrasound or require evidence of an ultrasound prior to administering the abortion inducing drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol. Sadly, because of the high profit margin involved with dispensing these drugs and leaving mothers to perform their own risky chemical abortions, the number of mail-order virtual clinics is on the rise.
If this 22-year-old woman had ordered the pills from a virtual clinic or received them from an abortion facility that ignores risk factors involved, she could have overlooked the symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy and resulting ruptured fallopian tube, believing them to be a part of the already extremely bloody, painful process of chemically aborting her child.
In that scenario, failure to seek immediate emergency care could have led to her death.
“This emergency points to the fact that abortionists who administer chemical abortion drugs without a preliminary ultrasound are incredibly negligent,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman.
“Though all abortionists have to be heartless to violate their Hippocratic Oath and purposely kill innocent human beings, those who dismiss the need to rule out life-threatening risk factors reveal their callousness toward the mothers of those babies as well.
“But abortionists are profit driven, looking for the quickest, easiest way to kill and collect their blood money. Who knows what would have happened to this young woman if it weren’t for Georgia’s LIFE Act.”
