Safety Crisis: “Lifeless” Patient Rushed From Bakersfield Abortion Clinic to Hospital

This is the third documented medical emergency caused by the same abortionist at the Bakersfield, California FPA Women’s Health abortion clinic in two months. This poses a serious public safety crisis.

Bakersfield, CA – For the third time in just two months, abortionist Karen Mann has sent a patient to the hospital to receive emergency care. Witnesses to the April 14, 2015, incident told Operation Rescue that this time the woman appeared “lifeless.”

“Her arms were just hanging lifeless off the sides of the gurney,” reported Terri Palmquist of Life Savers Ministries. Palmquist is a long-time sidewalk counselor outside FPA Women’s Health, formerly known as Family Planning Associates, in Bakersfield, California. “She was at least unconscious.”

Palmquist explained that nearly every clinic worker emerged from the abortion facility with sheets that were deployed in an effort to block pro-life activists from photographing the incident. However, Palmquist’s husband, Tim, got a very good view of the obviously unconscious woman.

The woman was rushed by ambulance running lights and sirens to Memorial Hospital in Bakersfield. Her condition today is unknown.

Mann has worked at FPA Women’s Health in Bakersfield for only about three months but has so far sent three women to the emergency room for care she was incapable of providing.

Other incidents took place on March 31 and February 3, when a woman suspected of having suffered a heart attack during an abortion procedure was rushed away by ambulance. Overall, this is the eighth documented medical emergency at this facility since 2012.

Tim Palmquist of Life Savers Ministries told Operation Rescue that people who have been inside the abortion facility have complained about conditions inside. One man, who recently escorted a woman for an abortion complained to Palmquist that the clinic was “very dirty inside, specifically mentioning q-tips on the floor and that they obviously hadn’t even vacuumed.”

Mann has a history of providing substandard patient care. She was sued in 2011 for a gruesomely botched circumcision that left a child permanently disfigured and has required several surgeries. The suit alleges that Mann “was negligent and her conduct fell below the care and skill required of medical doctors and medical practitioners.”

“It is our opinion that Mann poses an immediate danger to the public and has created a safety crisis in Bakersfield. Today, we are asking the California Medical Board for an emergency suspension of her medical license in order to protect the public while a full investigation into her abortion practices and conditions is done,” said Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue. “We will continue to investigate this on our end due to serious concerns that the patient may not have survived.”

Despite Desperate 911 Incident, Peoria Abortion Clinic Director Opposes Annual Inspections

By Cheryl Sullenger

Peoria, IL – A desperate 911 call from a Peoria abortion facility National Health Care (NHC) on February 20, 2015, reveals details of a dangerously botched abortion involving heavy hemorrhaging that the abortionist was incapable of controlling.

During the emergency call for help that lasted under a minute, an abortion worker repeatedly told the 911 dispatcher, “We need somebody very quickly.”

“This is an abortion clinic and we have a patient who’s bleeding very heavily and the doctor is not able to get too much of a grip on it,” the caller reported.

This life-threatening abortion complication comes at a time when the executive director of NHC, Margaret Vanduyn, is publicly opposing efforts by the Illinois legislature to pass a bill that would require abortion facilities to be inspected yearly.

Vanduyn claimed that abortion clinic inspections are “unnecessary” and that the inspection bill is “politically motivated.”

However, Operation Rescue has documented at least eight abortion-related medical emergencies at Illinois abortion facilities that required hospital intervention in the past three years, including one patient death.

“Abortion patient Tonya Reaves bled to death after a botched abortion at Planned Parenthood in Chicago a couple of years ago, and now another woman has nearly bled to death just three weeks ago in Peoria,” said Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue. “Illinois abortion clinics are not equipped to handle the medical emergencies that are injuring and killing unsuspecting women. That is reason enough to justify yearly inspections. However, abortion clinics that oppose such common-sense laws obviously have a lot to hide.”

Witnesses at the scene in Peoria on February 25 have identified the abortionist on duty at the National Heath Care abortion clinic at the time of the incident as the notorious Yogendra Shah, who works as the primary abortionist at the high-volume Hope Clinic for Women in Granite City.

Shah was sued for conducting an abortion on a woman who was not pregnant in 1998. He then unsuccessfully countersued the woman, seeking a gag order and $1 million in damages after she went public with her claims.

National Heath Care also employs two other abortionists who work on a rotating basis with Shah in Peoria.

One is Mandy Gittler, a Planned Parenthood abortionist who was responsible for fatally botching Tonya Reaves’ second-trimester abortion in 2012. She also works at the Planned Parenthood abortion facility in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

The other is Allen Palmer, an elderly “retired” Missouri abortionist that also currently works for Planned Parenthood in Overland Park, Kansas.

“With a staff of seedy abortionists like the National Health Center’s, it is no wonder that they do not want inspectors at their facilities. We call the Illinois Medical Board and Department of Public Health to fully investigate February’s near-death incident and take whatever action is necessary to protect women, including shutting down this dangerous abortion clinic,” said Newman.

Brigham’s Last License Is Revoked, Should Close His 8 New Jersey Abortion Facilities

Operation Rescue urges all other states with Brigham abortion facilities to shutter them immediately in light of the New Jersey Board’s findings.

By Cheryl Sullenger

Trenton, NJ – The New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners voted yesterday evening to revoke the final medical license held by the notorious abortionist, Steven Chase Brigham, noting that he betrayed the trust of the women he exploited.

In New Jersey, unlicensed persons are unable to hold ownership in medical facilities, so the Board’s revocation decision should force Brigham to shut down his eight abortion offices he operates there.

“He dons the mask of caring practitioner but he puts his patients at risk of harm,” Assistant Attorney General Jeri Warhaftig argued.

“Brigham is considered the worst abortionist in America that still held a medical license. His seedy abortion mills operated far below safe medical standards. Even abortion groups thought his dangerous abortion empire should be brought down. His revocation is a victory for women and their babies that were so often illegally aborted by Brigham,” said Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue, whose groups spent years exposing Brigham’s horrific background and practices and calling for not only his license revocation but his criminal prosecution as well.

Going further than was even recommended by an Administrative Judge, the Board found that Brigham committed violations that placed his patients at risk by conducting a nefarious and secret bi-state late term abortion scheme that started late abortions – evidence shows he aborted babies as old as 36 weeks gestation – at his home office in New Jersey then caravanned women in full-blown labor to a clandestine abortion facility in Elkton where he or an associate would finish the abortion.

However, Brigham held no medical license in Maryland and evidence showed that often he personally conducted abortion at the Elkton facility then attributed abortions to an 87-year old Delaware doctor, George Shepard whose paralyzed arm made it impossible for him to actually do them himself. Brigham used Shepard’s Maryland medical license to shield anyone from discovering his own lack of licensure in that state.

When Brigham’s scheme came to light, he had recently hired and was “training” Utah abortionist Nicola Riley to do the second and third trimester procedures. But in September 2010, the inexperienced Riley tore open the uterus of a young patient during a late-term abortion in Elkton, pulling out a bowel and shoving the remains of the baby into her patient’s abdominal cavity.

Brigham and Riley eventually shuttled the woman, struggling for her life, to a local hospital in the backseat of Brigham’s rental car, then returned to the clinic to continue abortions on their remaining patients.

Hospital staff reported Brigham and Riley’s suspicious behavior to police. During an ensuing raid of the Elkton facility, police made the grisly discovery of 35 late-term aborted baby remains stashed in a bloody freezer. This prompted Brigham and Riley’s arrest on murder charges, which were later dropped after an expert prosecution witness pulled out of the case.

Operation Rescue obtained a large number of documents pertaining to the case through open records requests, including detailed interview transcripts and clinic logs, and published them in a report that detailed for the first time the extent of the deceptive and dangerous practices in which Brigham routinely engaged.

“We never had to vilify Brigham,” said Newman. “He did that to himself. All we had to do is tell the truth about him. His despicable actions speak for themselves.”

Last year, Riley’s Maryland medical license was revoked. Operation Rescue had discovered and obtained military records that showed Riley had lied about a felony conviction and incarceration in order to gain licensure in Maryland and two other states. That revelation eventually forced Riley out of the abortion business for good.

In addition to his most recent revocation in New Jersey, Brigham has had licenses revoked or surrendered in New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, and California.

“If Brigham is not fit to practice in five states, he isn’t fit to practice anywhere,” said Newman. “We are now calling on Virginia, Florida, and Delaware to immediately shut down Brigham’s abortion facilities in those states based on the findings of the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners, which found that Brigham’s deceptive and fraudulent practices, which are being replicated at every abortion facility he owns, pose a danger to the public.”
