Michigan “Trunk Abortionist” Pleads No Contest to Three Felony Counts of Larceny

By Cheryl Sullenger

Detroit, MI – Abortionist Michael Arthur Roth, 75, appeared in a McComb County Circuit Court today and entered a plea of “No Contest” to three felony counts of Larceny in a Building.

The no contest pleas constitute felony convictions.

Activist Lynn Mills of Pro-Life Michigan was in the court room during the hearing and told Operation Rescue that Roth made a plea for leniency because he recently suffered a stroke.

Roth was criminally charged as the result of a car accident in 2015, when police discovered stolen drugs, abortion equipment, and aborted baby remains in his trunk. Roth had been secretly carrying out hazardous home abortions. He and an accomplice had stolen the instruments and drugs from an abortion facility owned by Angel Ojeda, who had employed Roth.

The incident earned him a nickname as the “Trunk Abortionist,” because he operated his illicit home abortion business out of the trunk of his car.

Roth’s Michigan medical license was suspended for one year, effective on October 13, 2017. He was also fined $25,000 for the “unlawful possession of a controlled substance” by the Michigan Medical Board.

Roth is due to be sentenced on December 7, 2017.

Press Conference, Rally, and Candlelight Prayer Vigil, Aim to Expose Illegal Late-term Abortion Facility in Bethesda

By Cheryl Sullenger

Bethesda, MD — This week, Nebraska late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart plans to begin offering “advanced gestation” abortions at an illegal abortion facility, AbortionClinics.org, Inc., in Bethesda, Maryland. However, that opening, set for October 17, 2017, will be met with a strong and unified pro-life response.

A press conference and rally, sponsored by the Maryland Coalition for Life and a group of activists with the @StopCarhart coalition, will be held on opening day at noon on the sidewalk outside the new office located at 10401 Old Georgetown Road Suite 104, Bethesda, MD 20814. [Click for more info.]

Later that evening, a Candlelight Prayer Vigil will also be held outside the new abortion business at 6:30 p.m. [Click for more info.]

Operation Rescue, which discovered the address of the secretive facility through an undercover investigation and verified that it has no license to conduct abortions, will provide a written statement to be read at the press conference.

Operation Rescue has since confirmed that Carhart’s new late-term abortion facility has no lab certification that would allow it to conduct routine lab testing, which is necessary for the kind of abortions late in pregnancy that Carhart plans to conduct there.

Operation Rescue has filed complaints with the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Maryland Board of Physicians concerning the illegal abortion facility.

“We are praying that since Carhart’s plan to conduct illegal abortions at a secret facility in Maryland have been exposed, that he will think twice about opening up this week,” said Newman. “In the case he does open, we will be working hard to persuade the authorities to enforce Maryland laws.”

Take Action!

Please contact Carhart’s new landlord for his illegal abortion office at the Wildwood Medical Center, Aubinoe Management Company at (301)986-9070. Please respectfully inform them that AbortionClinics.org, Inc., is an unlicensed, illegal late-term abortion facility, and ask that Carhart’s lease be terminated immediately.

Las Vegas “YouTube Abortionist” Committed Suicide in Jail While Awaiting Trial

By Cheryl Sullenger

Las Vegas, NV – A man accused of committing illegal underground abortions without a license was found dead at the Clark County Detention Center where he was being held without bond pending trial.

Rick Van Thiel, 54, was found hanged in an apparent suicide on July 21, 2017.

Van Thiel was arrested and jailed in September, 2015, for conducting abortions and other quack medical treatments out of a grimy trailer in his junk-cluttered back yard. A local news reporter dubbed it the “Trailer of Terror.”

He was never formally educated, trained, or licensed in the field of medicine. His background was instead that of a pornographic movie star/maker and inventor of sex toys.

Van Thiel bragged during an interview from jail shortly after his arrest that he learned to do abortions by watching YouTube videos.

A Clark County grand jury issued 30 felony indictments against Van Thiel in June 2016, including:

• 19 counts of engaging as a medical physician without a license.
• 6 counts of sexual assault resulting in substantial bodily harm.
• 2 counts of sexual assault.
• 2 counts performance of a health care procedure resulting in substantial bodily harm.
• 1 count child abuse, neglect, or endangerment.

As a five-time convicted felon, Van Thiel was also charged with three federal firearms violations. A judge had ruled to suppress information about the firearms charges during his state trial, which was set for January 20, 2017.

Van Thiel was an opportunist. Like many charlatans before him, he saw that offering cut-rate abortions and quack “holistic” cures to hookers and other vulnerable women was a viable means to quick cash. He lured customers through several seedy “adult” websites and by word of mouth.

“It is a shame that Van Thiel took his own life. As long as he was living, there was hope for his redemption,” said Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue. “However, he will never hurt another person again, and that is something to be grateful for, however tragic the circumstances might be.”

The arrest of Van Thiel came within weeks of news of two other illegal abortionists in two other states, raising concerns that underground abortions have become a dangerous new trend.

In October 2015, Michigan abortionist Michael Roth was involved in a traffic accident after which police discovered stolen drugs and surgical instruments, along with the remains of fourteen aborted babies, the result of his illegal underground home abortion scheme. He was later criminally charged and awaits trial in November 2017. On September 13, 2017, Michigan Medical Board suspended his medical license for 90 days and fined him $25,000.

Also in October 2015, Florida abortionist James Pendergraft was arrested in South Carolina for conducting abortions out of the back of his van and possessing illegal drugs. Pendergraft was never licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina. He was indicted by a grand jury in June 2016, on 10 criminal counts, and is set to stand trial on November 13, 2017.

“Before anyone thinks that a lack of access to abortion facilities had anything to do with this, all three of these men conducted illegal abortions in areas where there were several abortion facilities. This illegal abortion trend is all about exploiting the vulnerable to satisfy greed,” said Newman. “It is a thousand wonders that no mother was killed during these dangerous, unsanitary abortions. If anyone learns that there are underground abortions happening in their area, I urge them to immediately contact the local police.”

UPDATE: Trial for Abortionist Caught in Illegal Rolling Abortion Scheme Delayed Again

By Cheryl Sulleger

Spartanburg, SC – A trial in the case of Florida abortionist James Scott Pendergraft, IV, which was scheduled to begin last week, has been reset to begin the week of November 13, 2017.

Pendergraft and an accomplice were arrested on a highway near Spartanburg, South Carolina, on October 5, 2015, during a traffic stop in which Sheriff’s Deputies discovered illegal drugs and bloody, tissue-covered abortion instruments. This lead law enforcement to conclude that he was conducting an illegal abortion/drug business out of his van. Pendergraft is not licensed to practice in South Carolina.

Pendergraft was charged with 10 drug counts, including possession of sedation drugs used in abortions, LSD and marijuana.

Pendergraft’s case, which has been delayed several times already, was placed on the court docket for a jury trial beginning the week of July 24, 2017. However, the Spartanburg County Court takes the oldest cases on the week’s docket first. If the older cases take longer than expected, the newer cases are bumped to the next available space on the Court’s docket, which could be months away.

In the meantime, the State of Florida continues to battle Pendergraft’s appeal of the license revocation order for his three remaining abortion facilities. If Pendergraft is convicted in South Carolina, it is very likely that the state will prevail and his once formidable – but extremely dangerous – abortion empire will be shut down for good.

Operation Rescue will continue monitoring these cases.

Planned Parenthood Board Member Works in Houston District Attorney’s Office that is Investigating Planned Parenthood

Operation Rescue renews its call for a special prosecutor

By Cheryl Sullenger

Houston, TX – It has been learned that a prosecutor in the Harris County District Attorney’s office that is currently investigating a Houston Planned Parenthood abortion clinic for selling aborted baby parts, serves on the Board of Directors for Planned Parenthood.

ReederLauren Reeder is a prosecutor in the Harris County District Attorney’s criminal family law division. She apparently notified District Attorney Devon Anderson of her role with Planned Parenthood last week.

Reeder is listed as a non-compensated “Director” on the 990 Tax Form for 2014 filed by Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast.

Last week, Operation Rescue called on Anderson to appoint a special prosecutor to oversee the criminal investigation into Planned Parenthood.

Anderson told the Houston Chronicle of Reeder, “She will not be involved in any manner in this investigation. If at any time in the future, reliable and credible information is brought to my attention that would question our ability to continue to perform a fair, thorough and independent investigation of this matter due to her board membership, I will revisit the issue of seeking the appointment of an independent prosecutor and act accordingly.”

“Today, we renew our call to Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and District Attorney Devon Anderson to appoint an independent special prosecutor to investigate Planned Parenthood,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman, who also serves on the Board of the Center for Medical Progress, which released videotaped evidence against Planned Parenthood. “There are too many questions about the independence of the Harris County District Attorney’s office with a Planned Parenthood board member on hand and given the failure of a previous grand jury under Anderson to indict a Houston abortion provider despite ample photographic evidence and eye-witness testimony of late-term babies being born alive and intentionally killed. The public needs to be assured that an impartial investigation will be conducted on the facts and not on a personal political agenda.”

Anderson oversaw a previous abortion-related grand jury investigation of Houston abortionist Douglas Karpen after Operation Rescue released evidence in the form of photos and witness testimony that abortions babies were being born alive during abortions and intentionally killed by twisting their necks.

This case garnered publicity in the wake of the conviction of Pennsylvania abortionist Kermit Gosnell on three counts of First Degree Murder for intentionally killing babies born alive during abortions in a similar fashion.

That grand jury failed to return a “true bill” that would have led to Karpen’s prosecution. Operation Rescue has reason to believe that the grand jury did not have access to all the evidence, and that Anderson’s close personal relationship with Karpen’s attorney, Chip Lewis, may have contributed to the failure of the grand jury to indict Karpen.

Lt. Governor Dan Patrick made the initial request that Anderson’s office open a criminal investigation into the evidence of Planned Parenthood’s aborted baby trafficking activities as the result of videos released last week by the Center for Medical Progress that show Planned Parenthood executives discussing compensation for fetal remains, especially intact cadavers of babies 14-22 weeks gestation for the purpose of creating “humanized” mice in laboratories. There were also recorded discussions related to altering procedures to ensure that intact specimens were available for sale.

It is illegal to sell aborted fetal tissue for profit and illegal to alter an abortion procedure to protect organs for transfer to biotech facilities.

The video also showed the tissue room at the Houston Planned Parenthood facility where technicians sorted through the remains of an 18-22 week dismembered aborted baby looking for marketable body parts.

“Where there’s smoke, there’s fire, and there’s just too way much smoke blowing Planned Parenthood’s way in Harris County for us to feel remotely comfortable that Anderson’s office can conduct a fair and impartial investigation,” said Newman.
