Competency Issues Mount as Late-term Abortionist Carhart Unexpectedly Returns to Germantown

By Cheryl Sullenger

Germantown, MD – New information has surfaced concerning abortionist LeRoy Carhart, who had reportedly quit working at a Maryland late-term abortion facility in October 2016, some of which raises additional concerns of his competency to conduct abortions.

Eight weeks after his departure, Carhart unexpectedly resumed abortions at Germantown Reproductive Health Services (GRHS).

“We believe that the original decision to quit working in Germantown was probably meant to be ‘permanent,’ but something apparently happened that changed his mind,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “There are all sorts of rumors out there, but until we can confirm facts, we must refrain from further speculation.”

Since Carhart’s return to GRHS, the Maryland Coalition for Life has published photographs of at least two patients that have returned to the late-term abortion facility in the middle of the night seeking treatment. It is very unusual for women to be seen at any abortion facility in the middle of the night, and it usually means that something has not gone according to plan.

On December 29, 2016, one patient can be seen waddling into the abortion facility with what appeared to be a linen or plastic sheet – possibly a shower curtain liner — between her legs. The image was recorded at 3:49 a.m. By 5:30 a.m., everyone, including the patient, LeRoy Carhart, Mary Lou Carhart, and three of GRHS staff, had vacated the facility.

The following night, another patient was seen entering the abortion facility at 3:58 a.m. There is no indication prompted her to seek treatment at that unusual hour.

Carhart had been under investigation last year by the House Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives. A subpoena was issued to him seeking information related babies born alive during late-term abortions and to suspected trafficking in aborted baby remains. Carhart never fully complied with the subpoena.

The Select Panel’s final report discussed its investigation into Germantown Reproductive Health Center, noting that it interviewed four of the facility’s employees and one confidential informant. According to the report, the informant “claimed that [Carhart] is not fit to practice due to arthritis in his hands.”

Since December 2010, nine women have been transported by ambulance to a local hospital for emergency treatment Carhart and GRHS could not provide. One of Carhart’s 33-week abortion patients, Jennifer Morbelli, died from complications to the third trimester abortion she received from Carhart in February 2013.

Last September, a former GRHS patient sued Carhart for a near fatal abortion she received on January 18, 2016. Suffering heavy bleeding and severe pain, she was eventually transported to a nearby hospital where it was discovered that she was bleeding internally from numerous life-threatening injuries that included a uterus that had been slashed open from top to bottom during the abortion. That case is still pending.

“It has become all too obvious that LeRoy Carhart poses a serious danger to women,” said Newman. “Please join me in praying for him to leave the abortion industry for good and for both his abortion facilities in Bellevue, Nebraska, and Germantown, Maryland, to permanently close.”

Carhart’s Maryland Late-Term Abortion Business Caught Operating without a Lab Permit

Germantown, MD – An inspection of Germantown Reproductive Health Services (GRHS) conducted last fall discovered that the late-term abortion facility had been operating without a current medical laboratory permit. Late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart, who is under investigation by the House Select Panel on Infant Lives, commits abortions at GRHS in Germantown, Maryland, throughout all nine months of pregnancy.

Operation Rescue has obtained a copy of the inspection report dated September 25, 2015, that cites GRHS for failing to maintain a current medical laboratory permit. It allowed its permit to expire in August, 2013. The abortion facility was also cited for displaying an expired license.

But perhaps more concerning was a citation for failing to ensure that GRHS employees were proficient in testing women for the Rh blood factor. This had the potential of affecting the health of patients and any future children that they might bear.

According to the American Pregnancy Association, “The Rh factor is a type of protein on the surface of red blood cells. Most people who have the Rh factor are Rh-positive. Those who do not have the Rh factor are Rh-negative.”

The APA goes on to explain that if a woman is Rh-negative and is pregnant with an Rh-positive baby, the mother can develop antibodies that can attack future babies in the womb. Those antibodies can “break down the fetus’s red blood cells and produce anemia (a condition that happens when the blood has a low number of red blood cells). . . It can become severe enough to cause serious illness, brain damage, or even death in the fetus or newborn.”

“Testing for the Rh factor is critically important and must be done accurately. By not ensuring that all employees are proficient in Rh testing, Germantown Reproductive Health Services placed future babies of abortion patients in grave danger. This was reckless and incompetent,” said Newman. “Carhart has been in the abortion business for decades and he should have known better than to operate on an expired lab license. This is just another example of how Carhart acts as if he is above the law with no regard for human life.”

The Select Panel on Infant Lives issued subpoenas to Carhart, GRHS, and seven other businesses and agencies earlier this month seeking documents related to the suspected illegal sale of aborted baby remains and the information related to babies who were born alive as the result of Carhart’s failed abortions.

Carhart was ordered to appear for a deposition before the Panel on June 13, 2016.

Adding to concerns that Carhart and GRHS is endangering the lives and health of patients and their babies is documentation of 14 medical emergencies requiring ambulance transport from GRHS and Carhart’s hometown abortion facility in Bellevue, Nebraska. This includes the death of abortion patient Jennifer Morbelli that resulted from complications to a 33-week abortion administered by Carhart in 2013.

“We are relieved that the Select Panel on Infant Lives is taking a hard look at Carhart and his shoddy abortion practices that have inflicted human misery on so many,” said Newman. “We pray that his two abortion businesses will shut down for good and that the proper authorities will finally put Carhart out of the abortion trade for good.”

Videos: 911 Calls Confirm Carhart Nearly Killed One Abortion Patient, Seriously Injured Another

By Cheryl Sullenger

Germantown, MD – Despite heavy redactions made by the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, 911 recordings just obtained by Operation Rescue reveal that two of LeRoy Carhart’s late-term abortion patients suffered life-threatening medical emergencies with days of each other with one of the woman coming close to death.

Ambulances were filmed at Germantown Reproductive Health Services (GRHS), a late-term abortion facility located in Germantown, Maryland, where Carhart conducts abortions throughout all nine months of pregnancy, on March 20, March 30, and April 4, 2016.

There was no 911 call available for the incident on March 30, when a private ambulance was employed to transport a Carhart abortion patient.

However, 911 recordings were available for medical emergencies at GRHS that occurred on March 20 and April 4.

During an unusual Sunday call on March 20, GRHS Clinic Administrator Ashley Mouktafi can be heard making a desperate plea for immediate assistance:

We’re having some really bad vitals. We need somebody here now!

The rest of Mouktafi’s answers to the dispatcher’s questions about what happened and the patient’s condition were redacted from the recording, but witnesses on the scene described the woman as an “underage” patient. Scanner traffic indicated that the patient was suffering from “heart problems.” The dispatcher’s questioning was consistent with a possible heart attack.

During Sunday appointments, Carhart routinely sees only abortion patients who are far advanced into their pregnancies. The first appointment in the late-term abortion process involves giving the patient a shot of digoxin or other drug through the abdomen and into the baby to cause “fetal demise.” Thin dilator rods are then inserted into the opening of the cervix to slowly expand it in preparation for labor and delivery of the dead baby. Delivery of the baby’s remains can take place on day two, three, or four of the procedure, depending on the gestational age of the baby. Generally, the later the pregnancy, the longer the abortion process takes – and the riskier it becomes. [Read more about how late-term abortions are done.]

Based on what is known about how Carhart’s abortion business operates, it is most likely that something went wrong either during the digoxin injection or during the laminaria insertion.

“Could it be that Carhart muffed the digoxin shot and somehow injected the lethal drug into his patient? We may never know,” said Newman. “But we do know that this young girl was transported to the hospital where she had to undergo rigorous emergency treatment. This fits the very definition of a botched procedure.”

On April 4, Mouktufi again dialed 911 for another late-term abortion patient. While her responses to the dispatcher’s questions about the patient’s condition were again heavily redacted, the line of questioning was consistent with a patient who was suffering from uncontrolled bleeding.

This was corroborated by radio traffic, earlier obtained by Operation Rescue, which indicated paramedics were responding to an emergency involving “hemorrhage.”

Witnesses with the Maryland Coalition for Life tell Operation Rescue that the rest of the day’s appointments at GRHS were cancelled and all patients were sent home after the injured woman was transported.

Carhart patients have been transported from GRHS by ambulance six times in the past five months. Combined with similar incidents at Carhart’s Nebraska abortion facility, 14 Carhart abortion patients have been hospitalized since 2012.

“With Carhart’s advanced age and the increasing frequency of life-threatening abortion emergencies, it becomes obvious that competency issues must be addressed,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “Carhart is a proven menace that has already killed two patients and continues to pose a serious danger to woman. If the Maryland Medical Board continues to turn a blind eye to this growing danger, there is no doubt that Carhart will kill again — as he nearly did just a few days ago.”

Please join us in contacting the Maryland Board of Physicians to tell them to shut Carhart down.

New 911 Recording: Incomplete Abortion, Bleeding Hospitalizes Carhart Nebraska Patient

By Cheryl Sullenger

Bellevue, NE — Operation Rescue just received the 911 recording and Computer Aided Dispatch transcript from February 4, 2016, in Bellevue, Nebraska, that shows LeRoy Carhart indeed botched an abortion on a late-term patient, which caused serious bleeding that required emergency hospitalization.

The February 4th call reveals that a 33-year old woman suffered severe bleeding during an 18-week abortion. In Nebraska, abortions at 20 weeks or later are illegal.

In fact, the caller emphasized that the woman was “18 weeks currently pregnant.”

This is an indication that the baby was not fully aborted when emergency responders were summoned to Carhart’s Bellevue abortion business.

Such an incomplete abortion accompanied by uncontrolled bleeding would represent a life-threatening medical emergency for the patient. Her current status remains unknown.

Earlier this week, Operation Rescue reported that a 911 call related to a January 19, 2016, medical emergency at Carhart’s other abortion business, Germantown Reproductive Health Services in Germantown, Maryland, showed that another late-term patient suffered serious bleeding and was transported to an emergency room for care while Carhart packed his luggage in his car and left the scene.

Carhart, 74, holds no hospital privileges anywhere, and has had no such privileges since 1982.

Since March, 2012, Operation Rescue has documented eleven known medical emergencies at Carhart abortion facilities. In addition, Carhart has been involved in two patient deaths in 2005 and 2013. These incidents raise serious questions about Carhart’s competency.

“Carhart’s emergency plan is to call 911 and dump his problems on emergency room staff. Women deserve better than that. Carhart is an aging man that I believe is incompetent to continue practicing medicine,” said Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue. “LeRoy Carhart has never been held accountable by regulators for injuring, maiming, or even killing women. This represents a regulatory failure that needs to change as of right now.”

According to a recent report by Michele Hendrickson, Carhart addressed a group of college students at an event hosted by Johns Hopkins University’s Medical Students for Choice on February 3, 2016 — just the day before he botched the abortion in Bellevue.

There, he told students, “I believe I’m doing God’s work.”

“Of course, Carhart isn’t doing God’s work because God holds each life as precious, but living in that delusion may allow him to sleep at night,” said Newman.

Operation Rescue is currently preparing complaints against Carhart in Nebraska and Maryland.

Carhart’s Personal War on Women: 911 Call Reveals Serious Abortion Injury; Days Later Another Ambulance Rolls to NE Facility

By Cheryl Sullenger

Bellevue, Nebraska – With lights flashing and sirens blaring, an ambulance and fire unit arrived at LeRoy Carhart’s Bellevue, Nebraska, abortion facility on February 4, 2016. This incident represented the third time in less than three months that an ambulance was called to an abortion facility where LeRoy Carhart was on duty supplying abortions.

Not much else is yet known about the condition of that woman, however, Operation Rescue has obtained the 911 recording for a previous medical emergency on January 19, 2016, that took place at Germantown Reproductive Health Services, the late-term abortion facility were Carhart aborts babies throughout all nine months of pregnancy.

On the recording, a cheery clinic worker is heard asking for transport for a patient for observation, downplaying the seriousness of the injuries, which become apparent later in the call.

While heavily redacted, it is clear from the questioning of the dispatcher that the victim was likely a late-term abortion patient who was hemorrhaging, and may have been bleeding from the mouth. If that was the case, it means she likely suffered serious internal injuries as the result of the abortion.

The following portion of the recording is especially revealing.

911: Is she bleeding or vomiting blood?
[Answer redacted.]

911: …ok, and so where is she bleeding from?
[Answer redacted.]

911: …ok, and has the afterbirth been delivered yet? The bleeding’s serious.
[Answer redacted.]

The video shows that as the woman was transported from GRHS, Carhart and his wife, Mary Lou, are seen leaving the facility with their luggage and exit the parking lot in the opposite direction as the ambulance.

Carhart has no hospital privileges anywhere, and hasn’t since 1982.

“It’s possible that the Carhart’s had a flight to catch so they just dumped their seriously bleeding patient on the emergency room,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “This means he would probably not been available in the event emergency room personnel had questions about the injured patient’s care.”

Carhart similarly caught a plane and was unavailable when another late-term patient, Jennifer Morbelli, suffered complications to a 33-week abortion and later died at a hospital where her desperate family took her for care.

“It is clear that Carhart poses a danger to the public and it is past time for the authorities in Maryland and Nebraska to stop turning a blind eye to this carnage,” said Newman. “Once again, we will be filing complaints with medical boards in both states, and will continue to do so when these incidents happen until they finally understand just how dangerous he really is.”
