A hearing in the criminal case against late-term abortionist George R. Tiller is scheduled to resume on January 6, 2009. The case is often complex and the number of people involved can be overwhelming to those with a casual interest in the case. For your convenience, we have listed below a “cast of characters” involved in the case.

Abortionists

George R. Tiller – Late-term abortionist in Wichita, Kansas, who is currently facing 19 criminal charges of having committed illegal late-term abortions without the second concurring signature of a Kansas physician who is legally and financially unaffiliated with him. Tiller is one of only a few abortionists nationwide who will still do post-viability abortions.
Ann Kristin Neuhaus – A Kansas abortionist who exclusively signed off on all of Tiller’s post-viability abortions even though she was legally and financially affiliated with Tiller. This illegal relationship precipitated the current charges that Tiller now faces. Operation Rescue was the first to uncover this connection and publicized it in July, 2006. A complaint about this illegal arrangement remains open at the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts, which has disciplined Neuhaus in the past, declaring her a danger to the public.
Women’s Health Care Services – Tiller’s notorious late-term abortion mill in Wichita, KS. It is the largest free-standing late-term abortion mill in the Western world. There, Tiller employs three out-of-state abortionists to do most of the abortions. Those abortionists are LeRoy Carhart of Bellevue, Nebraska, and Shelley Sella and Susan Robinson, both of California.
Prosecution – Kline Administration

Phill Kline – Former Attorney General who initiated an investigation into abortion clinics that resulted in the filing of 30 criminal charges in December, 2006. Those charges were dismissed on jurisdictional grounds less than 24 hours later at the request of District Attorney Nola Foulston. Kline was defeated for re-election by then Johnson County District Attorney Paul Morrison. Kline was then appointed to replace Morrison as Johnson County Distirct Attorney, where he filed 107 criminal charges against the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic there. Kline’s bid for re-election to the DA’s office was also defeated.
Eric Rucker – An attorney who served under Kline in both the Attorney General’s office and the Johnson County District Attorney’s office.
Steve Maxwell – An attorney who served under Kline in both the Attorney General’s office and the Johnson County District Attorney’s office. Maxwell appeared frequently before Judge Richard Anderson on matters related to the Kline’s investigation.
Tom Williams – An investigator who worked for Kline in the Attorney General’s office and in the Johnson County District Attorney’s office. Williams was responsible for much of the investigative work during Kline’s abortion investigation.
Jerad Reed – A low level employee of Kline’s in the Attorney General’s office and in the Johnson County DA’s office. Reed received immunization from prosecution and gave testimony about his impressions of the Kline investigation, even though he was only peripherally involved.
Prosecution – Morrison Administration

Paul Morrison – Republican-turned Democrat who defeated Phill Kline for Attorney General. In June, 2007, Morrison filed the 19 charges against Tiller that are the subject of the current court proceedings. Morrison was later exposed to have been involved in a sex and abortion corruption scandal with former employee Linda Carter. He had allegedly pressured Carter to “spy” on Kline’s investigations as District Attorney for the purpose of impeding them. He was forced to resign.
Veronica Dersch – Attorney who was assigned to the Tiller investigation and prosecution under Morrison. Dersch was removed from the case after Tiller’s defense team filed a lengthy motion to suppress evidence in which Dersch would have been a potential witness.
Prosecution – Six Administration

Steve Six – Appointed to the office of Attorney General by pro-abortion Gov. Kathleen Sebelius upon Morrison’s resignation. Six has taken a “hands-off” approach to the Tiller criminal case and has, as far as can be seen, neither aided it or impeded it.
Barry Disney – Prosecutor appointed to replace Veronica Dersch after she was removed from the Tiller case due to having become a potential witness.
Tiller’s Defense

Dan Monnat – Wichita attorney who has been responsible for questioning witnesses. His law firm has contributed to politians who have worked to protect Tiller, including Gov. Kathleen Sebelius. Monnat was appointed by pro-abortion Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to the Kansas Sentencing Commission.
Lee Thompson – Former Federal Prosecutor, now in private practice. Thompson publicly endorsed District Attorney Nola Foulston in her 2008 re-election campaign. Foulston has repeatedly shielded Tiller from prosecution.
Erin Thompson – An attorney, who is also Lee Thompson’s daughter.
Laura Shaneyfelt – A pro-abortion feminist who assisted the extremist New York law firm, Center for Reproductive Rights, in the Aid for Women (AFW) case. In this case, abortionists and pro-abortion social workers sued Attorney General Phill Kline for having issued an opinion that stated he believed that the law required that all sexual contact in children 15 and under must be reported to SRS. Kline lost that case, and reporting has since become discretionary.
Judges

Judge Richard D. Anderson – This Shawnee County District Court Judge oversaw Kline’s investigation of abortion clinics. He oversaw the Kansas Supreme Court’s directions for the redaction and production of Tiller’s abortion records. He found probable cause to believe that Tiller violated the law.
Judge Clark V. Owens II – Sedgwick County District Court Judge Owens is the trial judge the current Tiller criminal case.
Others

Tim Carpenter – A reporter for the Topeka Capital-Journal who initially broke the detailed story of Morrison’s illicit affair with Linda Carter and of Morrison’s attempts to use his relationship with Carter to impede Kline’s on-going abortion investigation. Carpenter fought a subpoena to testify for Tiller.
Linda Carter – A former employee of the Johnson County District Attorney’s office and Morrison’s illicit lover. They began their affair while Morrison was still the Johnson County District Attorney. She filed a report with the Ethics Commission after her break-up with Morrison. She alleged that Morrison pressured her to “spy” on Kline’s ongoing abortion investigations so he could derail them. She also stated that they quarreled over Morrison’s initial reticence to charge Tiller.
Nola Foulston – Sedgwick county District Attorney and personal friend of Tiller’s. She has repeatedly shielded him from prosecution over the years. She persuaded a judge to dismiss the 30 criminal charges that Kline filed against Tiller in December, 2006, and is generally considered responsible for derailing two citizen-called grand juries that investigated Tiller in the death of Christin Gilbert, and for illegal late-term abortions.
Ann Swegle – As Deputy District Attorney, Swegle oversaw the two citizen-called grand juries under the direction of Nola Foulston. Both grand juries indicated that they wanted to indict, but, according to sources, were discouraged from doing so by the DA’s office.
Gov. Kathleen Sebelius – Pro-abortion governor of Kansas who was elected with the help of hundreds of thousands of dollars in Tiller’s blood money. It is generally agreed that Sebelius owes Tiller politically for her initial election to the governor’s office, and has paid him back by vetoing a number of pro-life bills that would have restricted his abortion business. In April, 2007, she hosted a lavish private party exclusively for Tiller and his entire abortion clinic staff at Cedar Crest, the official governor’s mansion.
