LA TIMES: For Kansas Abortion Doctor, Pressure Mounts

Dear Friends of Life,

The LA Times published a great article today describing the mounting pressure that late-term abortionist George R. Tiller is facing. The photo accompanying the story was taken during our Wichita Awakening event last July.

Setting aside the liberal slant, I think this story is revealing. It shows the hard work that Operation Rescue has put into exposing the nation’s most notorious abortionist is paying off, and that we are seeing the “beginning of the end for Tiller.” The story is posted below for your convenience.

Just today we saw even more signs of hope when no abortions were done on a scheduled abortion day.

Thanks to all who continue to support our ministry in prayer and giving. This wouldn’t be possible without you!

For God’s glory,

Troy Newman
President, Operation Rescue

For Kansas abortion doctor, pressure mounts
George Tiller is to be tried on 19 counts of failing to get an independent second opinion in late-term procedures. And activists aim to force an inquiry by a grand jury.

Dr. George Tiller, who draws patients from across the country to his Wichita clinic, faces trial next month on 19 misdemeanor counts. The charges — which he vigorously disputes — accuse him of aborting viable fetuses without first consulting an independent physician as required by state law.

Each count carries a penalty of up to a year in jail. If convicted, Tiller could also lose his medical license.

His opponents aren’t waiting for the outcome of the trial.

This month, the antiabortion group Kansans for Life submitted nearly 8,000 signatures to Sedgwick County District Court in Wichita, calling for a grand jury to review Tiller’s handling of late-second- and third-trimester abortions. Tiller’s lawyers appealed to federal court to block the grand jury, calling it a “vigilante effort,” but were rebuffed last week. State law allows citizens to force the seating of a grand jury.

At the Capitol, meanwhile, a committee controlled by antiabortion lawmakers held a two-day hearing this month to lay the groundwork for tougher restrictions on abortion. Among the witnesses: a woman who said Tiller rushed her into an abortion at the end of her second trimester without counseling, informed consent or a second opinion because she had arrived late for her appointment at the clinic. State officials said they might investigate those claims.

“This is the beginning of the end for Tiller,” said Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue, a Wichita-based antiabortion group.

Kansas law requires any physician who performs an abortion at or after 22 weeks’ gestation to first determine whether the fetus is viable, meaning it could survive outside the womb. Aborting a viable fetus is permitted only if two doctors certify that continuing the pregnancy could kill the woman or cause her “substantial and irreversible” harm to “a major bodily function.” Tiller has reported aborting more than 2,600 viable fetuses since the law took effect in 1998.

Tiller Delays Criminal Proceedings As Hundreds Pour Into Wichita To Oppose Abortion

Wichita, KS — A hearing concerning 19 criminal charges against George R. Tiller for committing illegal late-term abortions was delayed Friday as hundreds of young people began to pour into Wichita for the Wichita Awakening, an event centered on praying for revival and an end to abortion.

“We expect continued delays, because delays will keep Tiller operating as long as possible,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman, whose organization is hosting the event sponsored by The Cause. “What other person accused of 19 criminal acts is allowed to continue them while attorneys file delay after delay? We need God’s intervention to break through the web of corruption that continues to surround and protects Tiller. As well as repentance and revival, we are praying for justice.”

Saturday evening about 500 Christians surrounded Tiller’s infamous abortion clinic to pray for closure of the site of alleged illegal late-term abortions and the death of a 19-year old Down Syndrome woman from a botched 3rd trimester procedure.

Sunday afternoon mechanical difficulties grounded the busses carrying over 300 members of The Cause, who came to town as part of the “Summer of Love” tour, forcing them to miss Sunday afternoon’s scheduled prayer vigil at Tiller’s late-term abortion mill.

In spite of the absence of those young people, about 130 Christians braved high heat and humidity to attend prayer led by Concerned Women for America President Wendy Wright, who flew in from Washington, DC to join other pro-life dignitaries, including Norma McCorvey, the former “Roe” of Roe v. Wade, in calling for a speedy prosecution of Tiller and a closure of his abortion practice.

The Cause group will be in attendance at a worship service this evening at 7 PM at the Mid-American Indian Center.

Late-term abortions are expected to begin on Monday, when the Wichita Awakening has planned an all day prayer vigil beginning at 8:30 AM. The event will culminate with a prayer and praise service at 7 PM on Monday evening at the Mid-America Indian Center that will feature well-known Christian musicians and hundreds of youth from Wichita and across the nation.

Operation Rescue Office Attacked On Thanksgiving Day

Emergency help needed for increased security

Wichita, KS — Operation Rescue’s national office in Wichita, Kansas, was broken into on Thanksgiving Day. OR’s office manager, Brenna Sullenger, received notification shortly before 1 PM from the security company that an alarm had been activated and that police had been dispatched.

Upon arriving at the office, Brenna found police on the scene. The perpetrator had apparently kicked in the door of the office and then fled when the alarms sounded. Although the door was so badly damaged it must be replaced, it did not appear that anything had been stolen from the office. A police report has been filed.

In addition, Operation Rescue’s website was down on Friday morning. An investigation is in progress to determine if this was a cyber-attack on the group.

Currently Operation Rescue’s office is temporarily located in a trailer until renovations can be completed on the new office space purchased earlier this year in a building that was formerly an abortion clinic.

“We believe that the new space will be a more secure headquarters for us, but we are still raising money for the renovations,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “We don’t expect to be in our new building before spring. In the meantime, we must be prepared for attacks on our office and staff to continue or even increase as we get closer to our January event.”

Less than a month ago, the home of Kansans for Truth In Politics chairperson, Cheryl Sullenger was the target of an egg attack. Cheryl is also an Operation Rescue staff member. That was the second such attack on her home.

Operation Rescue is asking for emergency donations to help buy additional security equipment for their office, not only for the security of the property, but also for the safety missionary staff members that must work there.

“While property can be replaced, our primary concern is the safety of our staff members. If someone will kick in our front door in broad daylight, there is no telling what they will do next,” said Newman. “We trust in God’s protection, but we also need to be responsible to do all we can to insure everyone’s safety.”
