Birmingham, AL — On Wednesday, April 11, at 10:30 a.m. the national pro-life organization, CEC For Life, with the support of over 80 other local and national pro-life organizations and leaders, will hold a press conference and call upon the state of Alabama for the immediate closure of the New Woman All Women abortion clinic located at 1001 17th St. S in Birmingham. The press conference will be held just across the street from the clinic.
On Friday, April 6, 2012, following two months of investigation that rendered a 76-page deficiency report regarding the New Woman All Women abortion clinic, the Alabama Department of Public Health deemed it necessary to remove the abortion clinic’s license based on “significant failures in maintaining compliance with the Rules of the Alabama State Board of Health for the safe and effective provision of care.”
These significant failures included:

-non-licensed employees administering medications to patients
-false and inaccurate medical records
-failure to follow-up with patients experiencing deadly complications after abortion procedures, as well as failure to inform the doctor or hospital of these complications
-overdosing at least two known patients, and placing a third in ICU for excessive bleeding, due to inexperienced, untrained employees and lack of correct procedures and policies.

While the pro-life community applauds the Alabama Department of Public Health for requiring the clinic to surrender its license, it does not agree with the whole of the Department’s final consent order, specifically its decision to allow NWAW to remain in operation for another five weeks.
This decision to remain open is widely contingent upon NWAW’s promise to cease any and all violations of the Rules of the State Health Board. However, of the nine citations that brought about the surrender of NWAW’s license, four were repeat violations. If this clinic has obviously not complied with the health department in the past, why would they comply now, especially knowing the clinic will be shut down regardless?
It is also imperative to note that the state consent order not only calls for the revocation of the clinic’s license, but also bars two of the clinic’s abortionists from performing any procedures within this clinic again, and prohibits anyone attempting to take the clinic over from employing or even affiliating with the current owner, Diane Derzis.
If the state felt the public danger of this clinic warranted such restrictive action against the people operating it, why is it allowing those same people to remain in operation until May 11, 2012?
Furthermore, on January 21, 2012, the unlawful practices of NWAW abortion clinic resulted in the hospitalization of three women. If this clinic can injure three women in just one day, how many more women is the state of Alabama placing at risk by allowing this clinic to remain open another six weeks?
It is in light of these facts, that CEC For Life, along with the local and national pro-life community (see list below) demands the immediate closure of the NWAW abortion clinic.
Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, comments, “Our entire family of ministries at Priests for Life joins with CEC for Life and other national and local groups in calling for the immediate closure of the New Women All Women abortion mill in Birmingham. If they care about women, then all the reasons for closing this dangerous facility later are reasons for closing it today!”
National Assistant for CEC For Life Sarah Howell adds, “Every day this clinic remains open is a day that women could be injured or even killed within a facility that the Department of Public Health has already deemed a danger to the public. We will not settle for the state of Alabama continuing to place the lives of women in jeopardy until May 11, 2012. We request that the State use the full extent of its authority to protect the public now — not later — with the immediate closure of this unsafe clinic.”
