Health Dept. Reveals a “Shop of Horrors” at Closed NJ Abortion Clinic

Englewood, NJ — The New Jersey Department of Health has released information detailing filthy conditions at Metropolitan Medical Associates, an abortion mill closed by the state after a woman suffered 4 weeks in a coma and other complications due to a botched abortion there.

Health officials found dirty and rusted surgical equipment, a quarter inch of “brownish blood-like residue” and debris under procedure tables in four abortion rooms, and incomplete medical records. Their inspection found that “sanitary” equipment had been removed from its packaging and the contents stored in open bins and drawers with maintenance supplies, along with the discovery of other serious.

A clinic worker admitted that the abortion room floors were cleaned only twice a week, in spite of the clinic being one of the busiest abortion mills in New Jersey, doing over 10,000 abortions per year.

Attorney for Metropolitan, Frank Capece, complained about the “rigorous” inspection and having to meet a certain standard of cleanliness before being allowed to reopen.

“There’s no doubt that we’re being held to a strict standard, a tougher standard than any other facility that we know of,” Capece told reporters.

“Mr. Capece’s whining about having to meet standards falls flat when one considers the horrific nature of the violations. He acts like being required to use sterile, rust free surgical instruments, and being asked to mop the floors is some kind of outrageous burden. If his client really feels that way, they are not qualified to be in the medical business,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “In fact, Mr. Capece’s comments speak volumes about the lack of concern these people have for the health and well-being of women. Their whole focus is to get their little shop of horrors up and running as soon as possible because every day they are closed they are losing money.”

Metropolitan told health authorities that it had corrected all the deficiencies, but then failed a second inspection last Tuesday.

“We should remember that this mill has been scheduling abortion appointments in anticipation of opening next Tuesday,” said Newman. “We need to let the Department of Health know that opening Metropolitan Medical Associates would be a huge mistake and would put women at further risk.”

Please contact the New Jersey Department of Health and urge them to keep Metropolitan Medical Associates closed for good.

  • And Jivin J noted that this was a National Abortion Federation member clinic. So evidently sweeping the floors and cleaning the rust and blood off the instruments are not necessary to pass a NAF inspection!

  • Kelly

I’ve sent them a few e-mails in hopes that they won’t ever open their doors again.

  • Steven

Is it true that abortion clinics are not regulated like other clinics?

  • Mike

This is seemingly the norm when these butcher shops are shut down. There are probably untold more just like this out there.

It boggles my mind that the women who go into these places for their “procedures’ don’t notice how filthy they are, not to mention unsanitary and infectious.

This is a prime example of what happens when these clinics aren’t regulated. It makes me wonder what the actual doctors and nurses in these places look like on a daily basis.

So much for “safe” abortion. WHO are they trying to kid?

Where are all the bleeding heart pro-aborts? What will they have to say about this?

Fast food establishments face tougher health dept. requirements than these “women’s care clinics”.

Little by little, the secrets of these mills are being exposed. This should be front page news in every paper in the country.

Would NARAL care to comment on the difference between rusty coathangers and rusty crochet hooks?

  • Mary

I forgot to mention this in my previous comment.

I didn’t see it mentioned here, but at another site it said that rusty crochet hooks, used to remove IUDs, were also found.

  • I have e-mailed the New Jersey Dept. Of Health, Division of Health Care Quality and Oversight and requested the Metropolitan Medical Associates Clinic remain closed. As a member of the healthcare profession, I feel it is disgraceful and unethical to subject women to the substandard care which has been displayed here resulting in severe injuries of 2 women. The management of this clinic could not have been ignorant of the fact that sanitary and sterile conditions must be followed during the performance of an invasive procedure! This situation only proves abortion clinics must be under strict government survelance and inspection by trained people who monitor the charts of patients to watch for discrepancies in care and are observant of safety and hygiene factors and the qualifications of the employees who work there.Mandantory inspections on a regular basis must become the rule as it is in any other healthcare facility! I believe that a pro-life counselor should also be available to provide the other side of abortion. This person should be allowed to be in the clinic to give the mother the option “not to abort her baby!” Wouldn’t it be great if we could have that opportunity! To me, that would be more of a “choice!’
