Two Emergency Transports From Planned Parenthood Raise Questions About Clinic’s Safety

Orange, CA – On September 16, 2009, pro-life sidewalk counselors observed and photographed an ambulance responding to a medical emergency at a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic, located at 700 Tustin Dr. in Orange, California. Ten days later a different group of pro-life supporters observed and photographed another emergency transport by ambulance from that same abortion clinic.

“Two ambulances in ten days shows that there is something terribly wrong going on inside that abortion clinic,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “Abortion clinics only call ambulances when there are very serious medical emergencies. When ambulances start showing up with this kind of frequency, it is time for the authorities to start investigating. This clinic is not safe and women should be warned.”

During both incidents, sidewalk counselors reported that a Planned Parenthood security person came out of the clinic and began to photograph the pro-lifers in an attempt to intimidate them.

Operation Rescue is protecting the identities of the witnesses because of intimidation tactics and threats they received from clinic security on several occasions.

During the September 16 incident, an ambulance and fire truck arrived at the Planned Parenthood office at approximately 11:00 AM. They loaded a woman on a gurney into the ambulance and sped away.

Ten days later, another ambulance arrived at approximately 11:10 AM, leaving about ten minutes later bearing a Planned Parenthood patient to a nearby hospital.

During that incident on September 26, sidewalk counselors report observing abortionist David M. Speiser arriving at the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in his Lexis automobile with both the front and back license plates covered with paper.

It is unknown what abortionist was on duty on during the September 16 incident, but sidewalk counselors have identified Merle Robboy and Jonathan Dunn as abortionists who frequent that facility.

“It is our opinion that abortionists Speiser, Robboy, and Dunn each should be investigated for potentially illegal practices and violations of the standard of care,” said Newman. “These women could have died for all we know. We’ve seen it happen before. Someone in authority should care enough about them to look into this. We will be working with local pro-life activists to investigate further and will report any wrong-doing we discover to the appropriate authorities.”

Abortionist Carhart’s Criminal Investigation Underway

Lincoln, NE – Operation Rescue has received word that criminal investigators from the Attorney General’s office are in the process of interviewing former abortion employees that submitted affidavits blowing the whistle on illegal activity at LeRoy Carhart’s Bellevue abortion clinic.

One of the former workers contacted Operation Rescue and told Troy Newman and Cheryl Sullenger that she had been interviewed last week.

“We are encouraged that the Attorney General’s office is taking the allegations against Carhart seriously and are in the process of investigating this case,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “Mr. Bruning seems to be a man of integrity and we believe that he will enforce the law once he is convinced that the laws have been broken. We are confident that once the investigation is completed, the Attorney General will find there is more than enough evidence on which to bring criminal charges.”

Operation Rescue, along with Rescue the Heartland, Nebraskans United For Life, and the Christian Defense Coalition, filed a formal request for an investigation in July. That request was forwarded to the Department of Health and Human Services, which maintains oversight of clinics and physicians.

On the day that Operation Rescue announced that it had been informed that a DHHS investigation was being monitored by the Attorney General’s office, Carhart “laid off” nearly half of his abortion clinic staff.

Some of those women went to the press with their stories of illegal activity by Carhart. Three of his former employees, some of which were not involved in the lay-offs, contacted Operation Rescue and Rescue the Heartland and agreed to submit affidavits to the Attorney General and the DHHS.

Later, a fourth former employee came forward and gave a sworn statement with similar accusations of wrong-doing.

All of the women said that they did not have any medical training or licensing, yet they were instructed to perform medical duties that they were not legally qualified to do, such as starting IVs, dispensing medication, and assisting with surgeries. They claimed that drugs often came up missing, and that there was a general uncleanness about the facility, including the discovery of dried blood on instruments that had been laid out for surgery.

Some of the women claimed that they believed that Carhart was often chemically impaired while on duty, that he had poor personal hygiene, and that he rarely if ever washed his hands between patients.

Illegal Abortion Accomplices Sentenced

San Diego, CA – Two accomplices of convicted illegal abortionist Bertha Bugarin have been sentenced in San Diego County for their part in Bugarin’s illegal abortion scheme at her clinic in Chula Vista, CA.

According to the San Diego County District Attorney’s office Luz Catalina-Gomez and Paloma Yonna Solorzano-Rodriguez reached a sentencing agreement with San Diego Superior Court Judge Ted Wethers for probation and community service. “The People (DA’s office) did not take part in this deal,” said Paul Levikow, Communications Director for District Attorney’s office.

Catalina-Gomez was sentenced to 1 year of prison, which was stayed pending the completion of 350 hours of community service. She was also placed on three years of formal probation.

Solorzano-Rodriguez was sentenced to 1 year of prison, which was stayed pending the completion of 200 hours of community service and placed on three years of formal probation.

Both women were ordered to have no contact with their former employer Bertha Bugarin, or her sister, Raquel, and told not to seek employment in the medical field.

“The whole sentencing arrangement sounds fishy to us, but at least these women are out of the abortion business for good,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman.

“Let this serve as an example to all the abortionists and clinic workers who are operating outside the law. This could be you,” said Newman. “We urge those with knowledge of illegal abortion activity to come clean and report what they know to the authorities so they can avoid serious criminal charges.”

Bertha Bugarin is currently serving 6 years, 8 months on a total of 16 felonies related to conducting illegal abortions in San Diego and Los Angeles Counties. Raquel Bugarin was earlier sentenced to probation for her part in the crimes.

Of Bugarin, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said, “This criminal preyed on women in the Hispanic community and has now been held accountable. By passing herself off as a doctor, she put these women’s lives in serious danger.”

For years, Operation Rescue exposed wrongdoing at the abortion chain. As a result, numerous abortionists hired by Bugarin suffered license revocation and other severe discipline. To keep her clinics open, Bugarin began doing the abortions herself, even though she had no medical background or training. Her chain of six abortion clinics, known as Clinica Medica Para La Mujer De Hoy, has now closed.
