Dubious arrangement has shattered public confidence in the grand jury’s ability to properly do its job.

Olathe, Kansas – Over the objections of the District Attorney’s office, Planned Parenthood has reached an agreement with a grand jury that will release censored information from subpoenaed abortion records, but not the records themselves.

Judge Kevin Moriarty has agreed to take custody of the 16 abortion records, in which all patient identifying information has already been redacted, and compile information from them into a “spreadsheet” that the grand jury will be allowed to inspect, in order to protect what has been proved to be non-existent “patient privacy” concerns.

The agreement was called “ridiculous” by Assistant District Attorney John Christopher Pryor who expressed concerns that the Judge will also have to testify as a witness before the grand jury. It is improper for a judge to testify in a proceeding he is overseeing.

“This suspicious arrangement has made Judge Moriarty an ad hoc member of the Planned Parenthood defense team. He is taking on the role of censor and is preventing the grand jury from gaining access to critical evidence,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “Moriarty is allowing Planned Parenthood to run the investigation and only provide the evidence they want the grand jury to see without the benefit of the full context of the documents. It’s like trying to get an idea of the full scope of the Grand Canyon when only being allowed to view it through a peep hole.”

“We cannot trust the outcome of this investigation because the secret investigative process has been violated, subpoenas have not been honored, improper communications have taken place between special prosecutors and Planned Parenthood attorneys, and because of the appearance of impropriety concerning censored evidence. This process has become corrupted beyond redemption.”

“It is a sign of serious ethical problems within the system when the public confidence in the court is so completely shattered,” said Newman.

Olathe, KS – District Attorney Phill Kline filed a motion late yesterday asking for Judge Kevin Moriarty to enforce the sole subpoena issued by a citizen-called grand jury investigating Planned Parenthood, and raised allegations that the grand jury has been so corrupted by irregular and often “bizarre” behavior by Special Prosecutors Larry McLain and Rick Merker, that it is not now possible for the grand jury to rule one way or the other.

Last week, Planned Parenthood struck a deal in a meeting between McLain, Merker, a member of the grand jury to hand over certain documents in lieu of complying with the subpoena for 16 abortion records in which all patient-identifying information had been removed. However that deal was voided by Judge Moriarty last week after it was rejected by the grand jury as a whole as being inadequate. Judge Moriarty has yet to order the original subpoena be enforced 50 days after it was issued.

“Since when does the accused get to run their own investigation? Judge Moriarty must have a noodle for a backbone to allow this investigation to spin so out of control. He has allowed special prosecutors to compromise the secrecy and the integrity of the grand jury and allowed Planned Parenthood to set the parameters of evidence that they will provide. It is outrageous,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman, who was a member of the coalition of groups that led the petition drive to convene the grand jury.

The grand jury has met only a total of 11 days and is scheduled for dismissal in early March. It has issued only one subpoena.

“The will of the people who signed the petition calling for this investigation is being thwarted. To date, the grand jury has not considered all of the seven allegations that it was asked to review in the petition. There is no way this grand jury has done its job in only eleven days. It was convened to investigate Planned Parenthood, not to cover-up for them. This investigation has become a sham,” said Newman. “It’s time for the public to speak out!”

Convicted sexual predator Laurence Reich arrested in LA for committing abortions after being stripped of his medical license

Los Angeles, CA – Abortionist Laurence Reich was arrested and jailed last week in Los Angeles for practicing medicine without a license after a special LAPD Task Force discovered he had been doing abortions illegally. Reich, who faces three felony counts, posted a $60,000 bond and was released.

A protective order has been placed on the case, but it is known that the arrest is a result of an Health Authority Task Force (HALT) investigation that culminated in the raiding of several Clinica Medica Para La Mujer De Hoy abortion mills on August 1, 2007, and the arrest of owner Bertha Bugarin and her sister, Rachel for doing abortions without medical licenses.

Reich, an Osteopath, was forced to surrender his medical license on April 14, 2006, after a conviction on two counts of sexually molesting his abortion patients. Reich had previously served 10 years probation on a similar conviction in 1984. Operation Rescue exposed information it obtained that indicated that Reich engaged in gross sexual “misconduct” with his patients, which included fondling them before, during, and after abortions for his own gratification.

“Laurence Reich is a rapist who uses abortion to gain access to his victims. It doesn’t get any worse than that. Operation Rescue has for years called on authorities to put him in jail because of his pattern of perverted behavior,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “The law has no meaning for these people. Only substantial jail time will adequately protect the public from falling prey them.”

“We encourage pro-lifers across the country who minister outside abortion mills to monitor their communities’ abortionists. As more and more abortionists are banned from the practice of medicine, the chances increase that they will simply set up shop elsewhere,” said Newman.

“Abortion is a seedy business that attracts the bottom of the barrel. You can bet Reich and Bugarin are not the only ones out there victimizing women and flouting the law. Pro-lifers need to be on guard and report suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities, for the protection of women and their innocent babies.”
