OR Responds As KS Speaker Shelves Effort To Pass Tiller Resolution

Public nationwide is urged to immediately express concerns.

Topeka, KS — Kansas House Speaker Melvin Neufeld has backed off support for the resolution that would have required Attorney General Paul Morrison to reinstate criminal charges against late-term abortionist George Tiller of Wichita, indicating he will not act before April 25, if ever.

Neufeld withdrew allegedly to give Morrison, an abortion supporter, more time to review the records, even though the case, including all documentation, had already been prepared under the former Attorney General. Two judges have already ruled that there is probable cause to believe that Tiller committed 30 crimes related to illegal late-term abortions.

“We are disappointed that Neufeld has chosen politics over principle and the lives of innocent, viable babies that Kansas law was enacted to protect,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman.

“Mr. Neufeld’s lack of leadership is a betayal of the pro-life voters who elected him. This is perhaps the most important matter that he will deal with during his time in office — literally one of life or death. Now we have to ask if Neufeld is really pro-life, or is that just something he says to get elected? A real leader of character, upholding pro-life Republican values, would do everything in his power to ensure that the laws of Kansas are enforced, and would not be swayed by Morrison’s obvious stall tactics,” said Newman.

“I really doubt if Neufeld wants his political career defined by George Tiller, nor does he want to be remembered in disgrace as the man who turned his back on the illegal killing of viable babies,” continued Newman. “Fortunately, he still has time to redeem himself in the eyes of those who elected him. He can still show his quality by doing everything within his power to insure that Tiller is held accountable in a court of law. But time is running out. If Speaker Neufeld is truly pro-life, now is the time to act like it.”

“We are urgently asking every pro-life person across the nation to immediately call or e-mail Mr. Neufeld, even if they have already done so, and demand that he exercise every ounce of his authority to bring Tiller to justice,” said Newman. “We remember the Biblical story about the widow and the unjust judge. She sought justice to the extent that the judge granted her request just to get her out of his life. If that is what we have to do here, we will do it and not stop, because life has value, laws should be upheld, and injustice cannot be swept under the rug without devastating effects on us all.”

Former “Roe” Joins Battle To Reinstate Tiller Charges As KS House Falters

Topeka, KS — The former “Roe” of the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court Decision that decriminalized abortion in America has announced her support for the Kansas House Resolution that would require Attorney General Paul Morrison to reinstate 30 criminal charges related to illegal late-term abortions against George R. Tiller of Wichita.

Norma McCorvey, who was represented as Jane Roe in the landmark abortion case is now a pro-life activist and works to overturn the decision that led to abortion on demand.

McCorvey has sent a letter to each member of the Kansas House saying in part, “As the woman who helped make abortion ‘legal’ in America, I urge you to do everything in your power to stop one of the worst abortionists in America. George Tiller MUST be punished for the crimes he has committed—and you can help make that happen.”

The resolution passed out of the Federal and State Affairs Committee on Monday, but is now being delayed and may never reach the floor of the House for a full vote as time continues to tick on the legislative season. Morrison told the committee in a letter on Tuesday that he alone would decided it charges against Tiller would be filed.

“Any further charges will be based on my professional judgment, not legislative action or political calculations,” Morrison stated.

Charges against Tiller, filed by Morrison’s predecessor Phill Kline, were dismissed on shaky jurisdictional grounds even though other two judges who saw the evidence ruled that there is probable cause to believe that Tiller committed the crimes. Upon taking office, Morrison fired the special independent prosecutor assigned to the case then withdrew a motion that was before the Kansas Supreme Court asking it to reinstate Tiller’s criminal charges. Tiller spent hundreds of thousands of dollars through his PAC, ProKanDo, and two dubious non-profit groups to defeat Kline.

“We cannot allow justice to be subverted by backroom, under-the-table deals between dishonorable politicians and Tiller’s pocket-book,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “We stand with Norma McCorvey in continuing to call for the House to do everything in its power to reinstate Kansas v. Tiller, and let justice be decided in a court of law.”

KS AG a “No Show” At Hearing As Pro-lifers Rally In Support Of Tiller Resolution

OR to Morrison: “Enforce the law or resign.”

Topeka, KS — A group of about 120 pro-life supporters, most wearing red t-shirts that read “Charge Tiller — It’s the Law!” supplied by Kansans for Life, rallied at the Kansas State House yesterday to persuade legislators to support a resolution that would compel Attorney General Paul Morrison to reinstate the 30 criminal charges against abortionist George Tiller that has been filed in December by Morrison’s predecessor. The charges, all related to the commission and improper reporting of illegal late-term abortions, had been dismissed, not on the merits of the case, but on shaky jurisdictional grounds.

On Monday, the House Federal and State Affairs Committee passed the resolution by a 12-8 vote. However, the committee met Tuesday afternoon after abortion supporters complained that Morrison was not given a chance to respond to the resolution. The committee had invited Morrison to address the resolution, but Morrison instead sent a letter telling the committee in part, “I sincerely appreciate your position regarding the 30 misdemeanor counts filed by the previous attorney general. Any further charges will be based on my professional judgment, not legislative action or political calculations.”

“Morrison is basically thumbing his nose at the legislature, which is rightfully exercising checks and balances as provided by law,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman, who also spoke to a cheering crowd at yesterday’s rally and press conference. He later said, “If Morrison does not want to enforce, or in this case comply with the laws of Kansas, he should resign his position as Attorney General.”

Kansas law, K.S.A. 75-702, gives either branch of the state legislature and the governor the authority to order the attorney general to prosecute either criminal or civil charges on behalf of the state. However, at a press conference held by Morrison on Tuesday afternoon, Morrison indicated that he believed he would not have to comply with a resolution passed under that law, and called the legislative attempts to compel him to enforce the Kansas ban on illegal late-term abortions “politically motivated.”

Morrison told reporters that an announcement about whether or not charges would be filed against Tiller could be expected in “weeks.”

“It would be a huge mistake for the legislature to wait for Morrison to announce what his is going to do with the Tiller case,” said Newman. “This is simply a stall tactic on his part, with hopes of delaying action until the legislative session runs out. We cannot put any trust in Morrison’s word because of the financial help he received from groups linked to Tiller during the last election.”

“We call on the Kansas House to immediately pass the Tiller Resolution and take whatever other steps are necessary to bring Tiller to justice, and we urgently encourage the public to voice their opinion on this matter to Speaker Melvin Neufeld.” said Newman. “Time is running out, and the innocent babies that are being illegally killed at Tiller’s abortion mill don’t have another legislative season to wait.”
