VICTORVILLE – The Victor Valley doesn’t generate enough patients to keep its only abortion clinic open, Dr. Joseph Durante said Friday.

Durante’s clinic – the only one in the High Desert – is now closed, because of lack of business, Durante said.

“It wasn’t feasible,” he said.

Durante will continue to work out of his Palm Desert clinic.

The closure was good news for pro-life advocate Cassandra Lilly. Lilly remembers picketing and working to try to close the clinic when it first opened about 11 years ago.

Operation Rescue Participates in Specter Protest

Specter Draws Anti-Abortion Protesters
Associated Press

WASHINGTON, DC — Anti-abortion conservatives on Tuesday protested the possible elevation of Sen. Arlen Specter to Senate Judiciary Committee chairman just as the Pennsylvania senator was trying to convince his Republican colleagues that he would be a strong advocate for President Bush’s judicial nominees.

More than a dozen protesters gathered outside a Senate office building where Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., keeps his offices, carrying signs saying “Bork Specter”, “Sen. Frist: Stop Judicial Activism” and “Senator Frist: Listen to We the People.”

Robert Bork was a conservative jurist whose nomination to the Supreme Court was thwarted.

Specter has been on the hot seat with conservatives since saying that anti-abortion judges would be unlikely to be confirmed by Senate. Since his remarks two weeks ago, he has tried to assure Republicans that he would not personally block any Bush nominees from getting a floor vote.

WASHINGTON, DC – Nov 15, 2004 Pro-life/Pro-Family organizations will launch a two month campaign to call upon Republican leadership to intervene and ensure Specter does not assume this critical position, which will oversee the confirmation of all federal judges.

The protest will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m. outside the office of Majority Leader Frist at the Dirksen Senate Office Building. The location is the corner of 1st St. and Constitution Ave. NE.

After the demonstration, there will be a short news conference and then leaders will go to Senator Frist’s office in hopes of scheduling a face to face meeting before the Senate convenes for the year.

Protest Details–

What: Demonstration Against Senator Arlen Specter Becoming Chairman of the Senator Judiciary Committee

When: Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m.

Where: Outside the office of Majority Leader Frist at the Dirksen Senate Office Building, on the corner of 1st St. and Constitution Ave. NE, Washington, DC

Why: “We want the Republican leadership to clearly understand the appointment of Senator Specter, as chair of the Judiciary Committee, would be a slap in the face to the millions of pro-life/pro- family Americans who helped elect the President and give the Republicans a majority in the House and Senate. All the damage control Specter has attempted to accomplish over the past ten days has done nothing to convince us he will be a passionate and zealous advocate for the judicial agenda of President Bush and fight against judicial activism. Senator Frist must determine if ’seniority’ is more important than principle or the core base of the Republican Party.” –Rev. Patrick Mahoney, director of the Christian Defense Coalition
